Newsletter 3, 4th March 2016

Greetings everyone

Ride to school Thank you to Mrs Maslin for her efforts in organising and promoting the Ride2School day held today. It was quite a sight to see so many students arrive at school safely with their bikes, scooters, skateboards and helmets. Thank you to Ms Haloun, Mrs Opie and Mrs Rynders for rallying parent support to cook a scrumptious breakfast. Without the generosity of our local community this would not be possible. Special thanks must go to James and Daniel from the Bicycle Entrepreneur, Osborne Park for joining us again to man the ‘Bicycle Workshop’ doing many, many free safety checks on bikes! Our bread was kindly donated by Ben from Bakers Delight Innaloo, sausages from our very own P&C and our milk, fruit and yoghurt by Foodbank. We can’t thank you enough! Thanks to the families that volunteered today, Mr Jones and Mr Corlett for arriving early to sizzle sausages, Ms Haloun, Mrs Evans, Mrs Vanderputten, Ms Jorissen, Mrs Christides and Mrs Opie for baking and cutting up fruit and the Year 6 students for assisting on the day.

Students got to ride and scoot their bikes around at Recess today in the basketball courts. They had a great ride.

Dockers visit

On Monday we had a visit from Michael Barlow, Lee Spurr and Alex Silvagni from the Fremantle Dockers. They talked to us about healthy life style choices, setting goals and achieving them. Our kids asked some excellent questions which the three men answered honestly. Some of the most memorable questions included;

  • At what stage of life did you decide you wanted to be an AFL football player and what did you have to change in your life to achieve this goal?
  • What does it feel like when you know you’re achieving your goals?
  • What’s the best thing about being an AFL player?

Rottnest Camp Meeting

We will be holding a brief information session for Year 6 parents on Tuesday, 15th March at 8am – 8:25am in Room 14.

Sports Uniform

Students are reminded to wear their faction shirts every Friday. They also need to have appropriate footwear, a water bottle and a hat.

Harmony Day

This year for Harmony Day we will celebrate cultural harmony in many ways. On Tuesday, 15th March we will have a sausage sizzle and family picnic at lunch time. Orders for this have already been sent home and need to be returned to the P&C box in the office. We will also have a ‘words and letters’ hunt just before the lunch break on the 15th. Parents are invited to join us for this if desired.

School Leaders for Term 1

Congratulations to our School Leaders for Term 1. They are; Ethan, Riley H, Michael, Jade, Gabrielle, Elle and Taya. They will be leading the school for this term and taking on responsibilities as required.

Running Club

Running Club has started with a BANG! We have had an enormous turn out of both students and parents and I would like to thank each parent who has helped out in some way. Because of the sheer volume of children so keen to run I would like to continue with the help of family members as it makes the morning run smoother and more efficiently with the time we have. Sarah and Ethan from Churchlands Senior High School have joined us again this year as mentors for the students. Please be reminded that if your child is turning up for Running Club they must complete the entire session. Students who opt out half way through the session is hard for me to keep an eye on. Alternatively if your child is not attending Running Club they must sit in the TB4 Alcove area until 8:30am when they can then go off to class.

If any parents/carers have any suggestions for the upcoming Olympics please let me know so we can incorporate some fun ideas for our Running Club athletes.

AQWA Excursion

What a wonderful excursion the Pre-Primary and Year 1 students had at AQWA today. We saw amazing sea life and were lucky enough to touch some starfish, stingrays and sea cucumbers in the touch pool. We saw divers feeding the stingrays and sharks in the aquarium. A special thanks to Mrs Timms for organising such a fabulous day and our wonderful parent helpers who came along.

Library News

Stirling Libraries offer a number of programs and services that can make a student’s life that little bit easier.  These include: the Bookstars early literacy program and new Bookstars passports; our eLibrary; useful online databases; and for parents with younger children, storytime sessions, including Saturday morning storytime.    For students, look out for the following:

  • yourtutor is an especially useful tool for students.  yourtutor is a free interactive online homework help program, offering students real-time help from qualified tutors on a number of subjects. This service is available to use Sunday to Friday 3:00pm to 10:00pm.  This term Stirling Libraries are offering free training sessions in yourtutor for your class at any of our local libraries.
  • The Bookstars program is a great incentive to read and fosters a love of reading. Children are eligible to join the program from Year 1. Bookstars receive a reading passport in which they can record their weekly progress and eventually earn rewards. Bookstars membership is free and members receive invitations to special VIP events.

If you have further enquiries about any of these services, please email us at stirling.libraries@stirling.wa.gov.au or call (08) 9205 8590.
