Yuluma Primary School Library is the central resource for the students and staff of our school. We are staffed with a part-time Library Officer, Mrs Price.
The Library provides access to resources and facilities for all staff and students. The collection is developed, through school budgets and P&C grants, to support the school curriculum and priorities.
Students are encouraged to independently use library facilities for both research resources and personal reading.
Students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 have a library lesson each week and regular borrowing is enthusiastically promoted. These lessons are taken by the classroom teacher with the support of the Library Officer, to develop library skills and promote the love of literature.
Our Library is open Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes for the enjoyment of reading, research, browsing and exchanging of books and indoor games. It is also open before and after school on these days for extra borrowing.
Book displays are regularly changed throughout the year to promote both current and new books to the library. Two main events include WA Young Readers’ Book Awards (WAYBRA) which are books chosen by students of W.A. and the Children’s Book Council Award (CBCA) shortlisted books which are written by award winning and new authors and are a huge focus during Book Week. An incursion celebrating the love of books is also held at this time promoting Book Week.
YPS has an active P&C involved with a dedicated Book Club Manager. This enables students to purchase books from Scholastic Book Club twice a term with proceeds supporting the school library and our literacy program. Parents are also invited to help occasionally with shelving and repairing of books. They are asked to call in on a Library day to advise their availability.
A Book Fair is held annually and promoted and organised by our P&C with proceeds going to the purchase of new books for the library. The library is open before and after school during this week for students and parents to make their purchases.
